Sprinter Street Boss Streaks into Ancient Title
Street Boss entered this season with only a maiden victory to his credit but the speedy Street Cry (Ire) colt blazed a meteoric ascent to the top of the sprint division.
With six wins in seven starts this season and a five-race winning streak intact, Street Boss cemented his status as a top contender for the Sentient Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1). On Saturday at the Oak Tree meeting at Santa Anita Park, Street Boss will make his final start in preparation for the Breeders’ Cup in the $250,000 Ancient Title Stakes (G1).
Trained by Bruce Headley, who co-owns the chestnut colt along with Marsha Naify and Simon Yu, Street Boss won three of four starts to begin this season. He posted a one-length win in his stakes debut in the Los Angeles Handicap (G3) on May 10 at Hollywood Park.
Street Boss passed another significant hurdle with a half-length victory in the Triple Bend Invitational Handicap (G1) on July 5 at Hollywood. He enters the six-furlong Ancient Title on the synthetic Pro-Ride surface at Santa Anita off a one-length win in the Bing Crosby Handicap (G1) on July 27 at Del Mar.
In Summation finished second to Street Boss in the Bing Crosby and will try to turn the tables on his familiar foe. In order to do so, the five-year-old Put It Back horse must rebound from a fourth-place finish in the Pat O’Brien Handicap (G2) on August 24 at Del Mar and regain the winning form that led to a pair of graded stakes wins to begin the year.
Winner of the 2007 Bing Crosby, In Summation won the El Conejo Handicap (G3) on January 1 and the Palos Verdes Handicap (G2) on January 21, both at Santa Anita Park.
Idiot Proof won the Ancient Title Stakes (G1) last year and followed with a runner-up finish to Midnight Lute in the TVG Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1). After a runner-up finish in the $2-million Gulf News Dubai Golden Shaheen (UAE-G1) on March 29 at Nad al Sheba, trainer Cliff Sise gave the four-year-old Benchmark colt a respite.
Idiot Proof returned from a 4 1/2-month layoff on August 13 at Del Mar with a runner-up finish in the Green Flash Handicap in his turf debut.
The Ancient Title winner earns a starting spot in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint as part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge “Win and You’re In” series.
