Fly Higher Sets Sights on Stutt Victory

Honest filly Fly Higher will be the only filly lining up in Friday night’s Group 2 Badjar Ogilvy Stutt Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley.

The Lee Freedman-trained filly is yet to run a bad race from five career starts and scored her second win last start when getting to 1509m for the first time.

That was at Moonee Valley where she came from near last to beat the boys in three-year-old class.

Freedman decided rather than run Fly Higher in the Edward Manifold Stakes against his big team of in-form fillies, she would be better placed returning to the Valley as she heads towards the Crown Oaks.

“She won well against the colts and is already proven at Moonee Valley so might as well come here on Friday,” Freedman said.

Few fillies have been able to win the Stutt Stakes since the race was first run in 1934.

St Clemens Belle is the most recent, but she dead-heated with Helm in 1998, while Wellington Hammer was awarded the race in 1985 after the winner was later disqualified.

The only fillies to win the race outright have been Surround (1976), Denise’s Joy (1975), Storm Queen (1966) and Lady Sybil (1960).
