Akronism Looks Tough in Seaway

If Akronism runs the way she did when she won the Royal North Stakes (Can-IIIT) at six furlongs at Woodbine, she stands a good chance of winning the Sept. 6 Seaway Stakes (Can-III) at the Toronto track. What might hold her back is that the Seaway will be contested at seven furlongs over an all-weather track.

Akronism, one of eight distaffers entered in the $150,000 race, captured the Aug. 2 Royal North in a quick 1:07.88 by 3 3/4 lengths in her first Canadian race. The daughter of Not For Love finished in the top three in three stakes in the U.S. earlier this year. Trainer Tim Ritchey is going once again with Canadian jockey Eurico Rosa Da Silva.

The Royal North favorite, Marina Ballerina, will try to make up for her third-place finish in that stakes. She led early on, but weakened in the stretch and was beaten four lengths. She won her previous race, the Repercussion Stakes, but that was on turf. Sam Di Pasquale trains the Outflanker filly, who will get the return services of rider Justin Stein.

Top weight of 121 pounds was assigned My List, whose 2008 resume includes Woodbine wins in this year’s Hendrie (Can-III) and Whimsical (Can-III) Stakes and runner-up efforts in her last two races, the Sweet Briar Too at seven furlongs and Belle Mahone Stakes. The Banker’s Gold filly, trained by Nicholas Gonzalez, will be ridden by Emma-Jayne Wilson.

Executive Flight figures to get support by virtue of top three finishes in four stakes this year, including a score in the Sweet Briar Too. She drops back from the 1 1/16 miles of the Victoriana Stakes on grass. The daughter of Bold Executive is trained by Darwin Banach and will be ridden for the first time by James McAleney.

Street Sounds returns to Woodbine after several months south of the border. She ran third in the Hendrie Stakes (Can-III) in May. She was among the heavy hitters last year at 3 when she ran third in the classic Labatt Woodbine Oaks. Michael Matz trains the Street Cry filly, and Jono C. Jones, who rode her in the Hendrie, rides her again.

The three remaining contestants, Lomaki, Lucas Street, and That Girl Is Mine, will be looking for their first stakes wins.
