Northern Kraze, a three-year-old daughter of Aljabr, looks to continue her winning ways, as she readies to take on 12 rivals in Saturday’s $150,000 Ontario Colleen Stakes, at Woodbine.

Co-owned and conditioned by Mark Frostad, Northern Kraze comes into the one-mile turf Ontario Colleen on a two-race winning streak, including a score in the 1 ¼ mile turf Wonder Where Stakes on July 26, the third jewel in Canada’s Triple Tiara Series.

That three-quarter length win was preceded by a 1 ½ length triumph on the grass on July 1, a race that saw the Ontario-bred drive clear in the stretch to break her maiden.

“She’s really come into her own,” said Frostad, who co-owns the horse with Bob Anderson. “The last two races have been great. She’s becoming more and more mature with each race.”

Northern Kraze launched her career on Woodbine’s E.P. Taylor Turf Course last September, finishing third, just two lengths behind the winner.

In eight starts, the bay has only finished lower than fourth on one occasion, that coming in the $500,000 Woodbine Oaks, presented by Budweiser, when Northern Kraze finished tenth to Ginger Brew in the 1 1/8 mile Polytrack event.

“She’s shown that she can run well on the Polytrack, but we knew from the start that she would like the turf,” said Frostad, who looks to win his second consecutive Ontario Colleen, taking last year’s race with Speak Wisely. “She’s coming into the race in great shape.”

Breaking from post seven with regular rider Chantal Sutherland in the irons, Northern Kraze will likely be prominent on the early pace.

“She’s got good early speed, but she doesn’t have to be on the lead,” offered Frostad. “It’s a great post for her and she likes the distance. With each race, she’s become less headstrong and more sensible.”

Northern Kraze worked five furlongs on the ‘Poly’ on August 23, stopping the clock in 1:01 2/5, breezing.
