France’s Gold Cup Winner The Fellow Dies, Aged 23

The Fellow, the only French-trained winner of the Cheltenham Gold Cup, has died aged 23. Owned by Marquesa de Moratalla and trained by François Doumen, he also finished a short-head second in the race twice, to Garrison Savannah in 1991 and to Cool Ground in 1992. However, in the 1994 renewal he took advantage of a mistake at the last by Jodami and ran on up the hill under Adam Kondrat for victory.

Sir Peter O’Sullevan, a friend of the owner, said: “I had the pain of calling him a loser twice but then the good fortune of calling him home when he won. He’d been at the Marquesa’s stud near St Albans and meticulously cared for. He had been turned out with Sybillin, Trainglot and Amigos. Trainglot was cut up about it, they get very attached these horses.”
