Once again Larella was scratched from a major event, leaving a field of ten to contest the Gr.3 Walther J Jacobs-Stutenpreis at Bremen this afternoon. And the form of the Gr.3 Grosser Preis der Jungheinrich Gabelstapler earlier this month was well franked with Ashantee running out a comfortable winner.

After having stayed towards the rear of the field for much of the race Ashantee, ridden by Daniele Porcu, came up the centre of the track and took the lead with 1½ furlongs to run.

Hobby, third in the Gr.2 Ribblesdale Stakes, had tracked the leader and looked beaten halfway up the stretch, but came back to challenge the fresh leader. However, Goathemala, third in the German Oaks trial, came with a strong run towards the stands with Dawn Dew in tow.

It was Goathemala who made most progress and was soon laying down the gauntlet to Ashantee but Porcu drove on his filly who rallied gamely and went on to win with ease.

Goathemala finished second from Dawn Dew with Hobby further back in fourth. Counterclaim, runner-up in the Italian Oaks, ran on to claim fifth place.

Ashantee’s credentials received a strong boost today, not just by winning a group three event but her second behind Lady Marian in the Gr.3 Grosser Preis der Jungheinrich Gabelstapler earlier in the month was impressive considering Lady Marian upset a very strong field earlier today in Deauville to win the Gr.3 Prix de la Nonette.
