Avanti Polonia, winless from six starts since landing the Gr.3 Fährhofer Stutenpreis for Peter Schiergen in June 2007, ran out a convincing winner of this afternoon’s Gr.2 Prix de Pomone at Deauville, on her fourth start for in-form trainer Freddy Head.

Alix Rose was quick to break but Alexis Badel was unwillingly to make the pace leaving dual G.1 winner Mrs Lindsay to lead the small field of six. Badel placed himself in behind, followed by Believe Me and Lancashire Oaks winner Anna Pavlova.

Turfrose, winner of last season’s Gr.1 Lydia Tesio ran alongside as Avanti Polonia held the rear.

Half way down the back stretch the field was well spread out as Mrs Lindsay continued to set a moderate pace however at the entry to the straight there were just five lengths separating the field.

Avoiding the good ground Paul Hanagan took the inside and was quickly followed by Turfrose. Mrs Lindsay still held on to her small lead but it was quickly whittled down by Teruya Yoshida’s German-bred filly.

Her lead however was short-lived as Avanti Polonia and Davy Bonilla came with a strong run on the standside. Turfrose held on for a few strides but Avanti Polonia accelerated well and went on to win by 1½ lengths.

Believe Me was a further 2½ lengths back in third with Mrs Lindsay a disappointing fourth a half-length ahead of Anna Pavlova.
