Shalt Not Tops Second MM Mares Session
Shalt Not, a stakes performer in her own right and the dam of recent racetrack sensation Amelia’s Dream, took the top honours at today’s second session of the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale on the Gold Coast.
The daughter of St Covet, who was a member of the early supplementary catalogue, was snapped up by Cambridge Stud studmaster Marcus Corban on behalf of Sir Patrick Hogan for $1.05 million.
A member of the Yarraman Park Stud draft, Shalt Not was sold in foal to prominent Hunter Valley stallion Testa Rossa.
“We had the one bid right at the end and were able to get her,” Hogan reported.
“Mares like her are rarely up for auction and we are thrilled to be able to get her.”
Hogan said Shalt Not had proved herself as a star on the track and was now proving her worth as a broodmare.
“Amelia’s Dream looked the one to beat in the Slipper, that’s for sure,” Hogan said. “She certainly burst on the scene very quickly.”
Hogan praised the New Zealand Government for their recent support of the thoroughbred industry which gave him the confidence to invest in a high priced mare on the Gold Coast.
“They must be thanked for all they have done for the breeding industry - particularly with boosting stakes.”
Hogan said the mare would be trucked to Brooklyn Lodge in the Hunter Valley while he makes a decision as to which stallion will serve the mare this spring.
“Obviously Redoute’s Choice would be a good option - but I’ve got some stallions as good as him at home,” he noted.
Shalt Not was the second mare today to top the seven figure barrier following Musidora’s sale to Melbourne agent Mark Pilkington for $1 million.
All up with today’s figures the broodmare sale aggregate rose to a tick under $22 million with a day to run in the select session of the catalogue.
The clearance rose today to 73 per cent overall and the average price was just a tick under $83,000.
“Selling was stronger today and I’m hoping that continues for tomorrow’s third session,” Magic Millions managing director David Chester said.
“‘We’ve got some great prospects to go under the hammer and I’m certain plenty more value will be found.”
