Super Hornet Wins G.2 Keio Hai Spring Cup

Second choice on the board, Super Hornet closed strongly to capture this year’s Keio Hai Spring Cup, holding off the 5 year old mare Kiss To Heaven, and heavy favorite Suzuka Phoenix under Yutaka Take, covering the 1,400m in 1:20.8. This marks Super Hornet’s second graded-race victory following his win in the Mainichi Broadcast Swan Stakes last season.

Breaking from the rail Incentive Guy immediately took the lead and traveled solo, opening a comfortable five-length lead by the first turn. Super Hornet travelled in mid-division stalked by Kiss To Heaven, while Suzuka Phoenix sat near the rear of the field losing ground.

The field turned for home with Incentive Guy stubbornly holding on to his lead, but had to give way at the furlong pole to King’s Trail, who took a ground-saving trip along the rail the whole distance.

However storming down the middle of the lane passing the leaders came Super Hornet under confident handling by jockey Yusuke Fujioka. Kiss To Heaven closed in behind that but was a threat to the winner, clearing the wire 1¾ lengths behind in second.

Fastest in the last 3 furlongs, Suzuka Phoenix demonstrated a remarkable turn of foot and attacked the leaders in the stretch, but too late, finishing a neck behind Kiss To Heaven in third.
