Sarrera Surprises in G.1 Doomben Cup

Talented galloper Sarrera continues to surprise trainer Mike Moroney after he claimed another feature race against the odds – today’s Group 1 XXXX Gold Doomben Cup (2000m).

Last start the seven-year-old was sent to Sydney to find a wet track and while he raced on a dead track Moroney didn’t think it was wet enough.

He belied his 50/1 odds though and burst through to score a major boilover in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

Moroney sent him north to Queensland with stablemates Eskimo Queen and Mission Critical for today’s feature race but again felt the track would be too firm to win another Group 1 weight-for-age feature.

Although starting far shorter that his Queen Elizabeth win he again proved his knockers wrong after another top ride by Damien Oliver, who has also quickly silenced knockers with a few recent Group 1 wins.

Oliver had the gelding positioned off the pace before getting off the fence and setting out after Rampant Lion, who had stolen a break at the top of the straight.

Sarrera proved the superior in the straight running away with an easy win over the game Rampant Lion, with early leader Like It Is holding third.

Favourite Scenic Shot had every chance after a great ride form his wide gate by Glen Colless but could only manage fourth, while the second favourite Eskimo Queen was no match for her stablemate and tired in the straight.

It was the first win in the race for both trainer and jockey and the trio are likely to combine again in the Group 2 O’Shea Stakes (2200m) at Eagle Farm later in the month.
