Trick Of Light Makes it for G.1 Doomben Cup
Trainer Mick Kent is thankful to be lining up talented mare Trick Of Light in Saturday’s Group 1 Doomben Cup.
Following her win in the Queen Of The South Stakes over a mile at Morphettville five weeks ago Kent said she would be set for the Doomben Cup as he felt the 2000m would be ideal for her.
But trying to get to Brisbane has proven a headache and remains a stumbling block for trainers wanting to compete horses at interstate carnival.
Only this week Perth Racing announced it will counter the problem for their summer racing carnival at the end of this year by hiring their own plane to fly horses from Victoria.
A handful of Victorian horses have waited all week to get their charges to Brisbane, with flights being cancelled on Tuesday and Wednesday, with overnight Thursday their last chance to get there in time.
Three horses made it – the Russell Cameron trained Rathsallagh who will race in the Doomben Roses as well as mares Trick Of Light and Like It Is , who are both engaged in the feature race, the Doomben Cup.
“She was lucky to get there at all but arrived safely overnight Thursday and seems to have settled in well,” Kent said. “She is best on a very light campaign and the distance suits her. Hopefully she’s good enough.”
History says the mares, and there are plenty of them this year, struggle in the race with only last year’s winner, Cinque Cento, scoring for the sex since 1950.
There are six mares lining up in tomorrow’s race, headed by Mike Moroney’s Eskimo Queen who has joined West Australian Scenic Shot as favourite at $5.00.
Trick Of Light is an $12.00 chance while Lasaron and Like It Is are both at $15.00.
Reggie, stablemate to last year’s winner, is at $21.00 while another Victorian Lectrice is a $41.00 chance.
