Verdana Bold attempts her second stakes score in a row in Sunday’s $250,000 Selene Stakes at Woodbine.

The 1 1/16-mile event has attracted a field of nine three-year-old fillies, including a trio of Ontario-breds that may be using the Grade 3 event as a prep for the $500,000 Woodbine Oaks Stakes, presented by Budweiser.

Verdana Bold, a chestnut daughter of Rahy, was ready to run when she arrived at the Toronto oval for the April 10 Star Shoot Stakes at six furlongs.

Eager from the start of the six-furlong dash, the Kentucky-bred filly wasn’t given the chance to perform until the top of the stretch, where Emile Ramsammy was able to find her a seam.

Verdana Bold exploded to the front and left favorite Authenicat a grudging second.

“Emile is a great rider,” said Vella. “He had lots of horse. He was kind of stuck in there. He didn’t panic. He made her settle and she did the rest. She’s a nice filly.”

In the Selene, Verdana Bold will be attempting a route distance for the first time.

Since the Star Shoot, the Edward Seltzer-owned filly has worked on three occasions, including a six-furlong move in 1:12 1/5, handily, over the Woodbine Polytrack.

A three-time winner from five starts, Verdana Bold has banked $123,780.

Verdana Bold is out of unraced A.P. Indy mare True Legacy, who is a half-sister to multiple stakes winner Holzmeister.

The Selene is scheduled for race eight on Sunday’s 10-race programme.
