Samuel to Take Flight in Yorkshire Cup

With question marks over the leading contenders, Samuel can spring a surprise in the Emirates Airline Yorkshire Cup (2.40) at York today.

He disappointed when well beaten in the St Leger on his final start last season, but had looked a progressive young stayer when making the frame behind useful rivals on his three previous starts, notably when a staying-on length third to Tranquil Tiger at Newmarket despite the slow early pace being against him. A true test at this trip should suit him ideally and he can find the necessary improvement to open his account.

Of his rivals, Honolulu boasts the best form but prefers an easier surface, as does Royal And Regal, while Geordieland is hard to win with and last year’s winner, Sergeant Cecil, seems past his best.

The best bet of the day is Luberon in the Reland Jorvik Heritage Handicap (2.10). He has rediscovered his form on the all-weather of late and is 11lb lower than when winning over course and distance two years ago. He is a value bet at 9-1 with totesport.

The Michael Seely Memorial Fillies’ Stakes (3.10) can go to Makaaseb. Unsuited by cut in the ground when seventh in the Rockfel Stakes at Newmarket, she is well worth another chance.
