Rebellion to Ship West for Shoemaker Mile
Rebellion, winner of the Commonwealth Stakes at Keeneland in his last outing, will make his next start in the $250,000 Shoemaker Mile at Hollywood Park May 26, trainer H. Graham Motion confirmed Thursday from his headquarters at Fair Hill, Md.
“The Shoemaker has been on our radar since he won at Keeneland,” said Motion of the Grade II victory at seven furlongs on April 12. “The timing of the Shoemaker is very good.” The Grade I Shoemaker is on turf.
Rebellion, a 5-year-old English-bred horse, rallied six-wide from eighth to win the Commonwealth by a head over Elite Squadron. “He ran a really nice race, and the horse who ran second came back to win a stake at Churchill,” said Motion. “I don’t think a mile will be a problem.”
Rebellion finished eighth in the Breeders’ Cup Mile, beaten by 7¼ lengths, during a troubled trip on a soft Monmouth Park course in October. “He had a real tough trip,” said Motion of the New Jersey race, in which he was steadied on both turns under Eibar Coa.
Edgar Prado, who rode Rebellion for the first time in the Commonwealth, has the call back in the Shoemaker.
“Rebellion will work Saturday at Fair Hill and be flown out from New York next Thursday or Friday,” said Motion, who added that assistant Alice Clapham will accompany the horse.
Rebellion, a son of Mozart bred by Darley Stud, began his career in England in 2005 with three third-place finishes. In 2006, he won twice on polytrack at Lingfield before being sold at auction at the end of the year.
“Joe Seitz bought him at a Tattersalls sale for Jim Treptow, who goes by Hickory Tree Stable in Middleburg, Va.,” said Motion of the current owner. Rebellion reeled off three straight turf victories at Colonial, Laurel and Belmont last year before finishing second in the Phoenix Stakes at Keeneland and running in the Breeders’ Cup. He has won six of 15 career starts and earned $400,347.
Rebellion is expected to face Kilroe Mile winner Ever a Friend (Tyler Baze), Hollywood Derby and Arcadia Handicap winner Daytona (Alex Solis), Arcadia runner-up Hyperbaric (Rafael Bejarano), Inglewood Handicap winner El Roblar (Victor Espinoza), 2007 Shoemaker runner-up Get Funky (Michael Baze) and a pair of trainees from the Bobby Frankel stable.
Motion said he may also ship Jade’s Revenge west for the $100,000-added Gallant Man Handicap at 1 5/8 miles on Cushion Track June 1. The horse won the 13-furlong Fort Harrod Stakes at Keeneland on April 19.
The Shoemaker is part of a Memorial Day Grade I stakes doubleheader that also includes the $250,000 Gamely Handicap for fillies and mares at 1 1/8 miles on turf. Probable starters include the Frankel-trained duo of Precious Kitten and Costume, Rutherienne, Diamond Diva, Lavender Sky and Green Lyons.
