Ramsden Stakes to Prove a Telling Contest
A number of runners in tomorrow’s Listed Andrew Ramsden Stakes (3200m) at Flemington are facing their acid tests to feature staying races over the spring carnival, including the Melbourne Cup.
A win in tomorrow’s race, over the same track and distance as the Cup, will pass the first balloting clause to Flemington’s feature in winning a race worth more than $60,000 to the winner beyond 2300m.
The likes of Video Star, Doubly Sure, Good Red and Chiefcomingfirst, all well in the market for tomorrow’s race, are testing the water to better races later in the year.
Tony Vasil’s Doubly Sure has been touted as a two miler from a very early age and tomorrow gets his chance to prove his mettle.
“This is his acid test for the spring,” Vasil’s assistant trainer Simon Miller said.
“He’s always given the indication he would run the journey right out and the way he finished off last start you’d think he could run that bit extra.”
Doubly Sure, a lightly-raced four-year-old by O’Reilly, has won two of his last five starts but didn’t have much luck at the other three.
Being a noted backmarker he will always need a bit of luck but had little of that last start when a fast finishing third behind Hooker Road over 3000m at Moonee Valley.
“He drew the inside gate and was three back the fence in a slowly run race,” Miller said. “Once he got out and into the clear the race was all over but he did work home well.
“He’s bright and happy and has a nice weight tomorrow. The big track will suit and with a bit of luck he’ll be running on again.”
Doubly Sure is at $8.50 on the third line of betting, along with Video Star and Chiefcomingfirst.
Gorky Park, back in form last start, is at $6.50 while the favourite is the honest Good Red, who has placed at his last six starts, at $4.60.
