Trincot Puts Classic Hopes On Line in G.3 Prix de Guiche
Although Philippe Demercastel had no luck yesterday with his two runners in the G.2 Prix Greffulhe, he may well be saddling a colt with classic pretensions this afternoon.
Trincot (Peintre Celebre) looks the pick of a small field of five in the G.3 Prix de Guiche at Chantilly. Still a maiden after six runs as a juvenile Trincot can nonetheless boast running a half-length second to Thewayyouare at Deauville.
His two starts this year have both met with success, notably beating subsequent French 2,000 Guineas winner Falco by three parts of a length at Compiègne in March.
André Fabre is represented by James Wigan’s In Seclusion (Cozzene) who recently impressed on his seasonal bow when winning a Class B mile race at Longchamp. He is lightly raced and looks ready to step up to today’s nine furlongs.
As a two year-old In Seclusion was soundly beaten by the Khalid Abdullah-owned Putney Bridge at Deauville. There is little doubt that Criquette Head-Maarek’s son of Mizzen Mast has ability, having finished third in last season’s G.1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud, but he has failed to shine on two occasions this year.
Michel Delzangles enters In Chambers (Oasis Dream) into the equation. He was a solid third to Hello Morning and yesterday’s Prix Greffulhe winner Prospect Wells on his last of two runs last year and began 2008 with success, routing a strong Class B field which included Wifi, another highly promising son of Pivotal.
Mayweather (Nayef) hails from the strong stable of Jean-Claude Rouget. He was twice a winner at two in Marseille before being put away for the winter. He came back in March and won over 9½ furlongs on the fibresand at Deauville before finishing a lacklustre fifth in the G.2 Prix Noailles. The better ground should be to his advantage today.
After the French Derby was reduced to 2100m (10½f) in 2005 the G.3 Prix de Guiche, at nine furlongs, is a late but telling trial for the G.1 Prix du Jockey Club. Last year Lawman won this race before going on to land the French Derby and G.1 Prix Jean Prat.
