Nine fillies take their chances at Cologne for the G.3 Schwarzgold-Rennen, a tough prep race for the June 1st German 1,000 Guineas.

The first two home in last October’s G.3 Preis der Winterkönigin grace the field and it’s the winner, Love Academy (Medicean) who will likely be sent off favourite. Runner-up Diamantgottin was 1½ lengths behind that day but trainer Peter Rau is confident of a strong run this afternoon.

Themelie Island (Montjeu), who has won two from three was thought good enough to race at group level on only her second start and although she finished sixth to Pomellato at Baden-Baden last August, is still a filly with ability.

Peace Royale (Sholokhov), sixth to yesterday’s French 1,000 Guineas winner Zarkava, in last year’s G.1 Prix Marcel Boussac will be one to watch. Her five-lengths romp at Dusseldorf a month earlier was enough for Andreas Wöhler to race her at the highest level.

Just two of the field have raced this year so it is difficult to know who has progressed. One is Soledad (Auenadler) who will have to show more to be competitive today. The other, the second of three Wöhler runners, Manipura (Dansili), was a seven-lengths winner of a valuable sales race at Baden-Baden before stepping up in company to finish fifth behind Celtic Slipper in the G.3 Premio Dormello at San Siro last year. Her lone outing this year saw her finish fourth in a Listed race at Dusseldorf three weeks ago.

Two year-old form may not dictate the outcome of the race.
