Belong To Many Upsets in G.2 Sapphire

Aptly named mare Belong To Many left her syndicate of 800 owners to celebrate without their trainer aftrer she recorded an upset vwin $175,000 Seek Executive Sapphire Stakes at Randwick today.

Belong To Many’s Canberra trainer Barbara Joseph elected not to attend the Randwick meeting, instead heading to Wagga to prepare her team for the two-day Wagga Cup carnival on Thursday and Friuday.

Her absence made no difference to the result for Belong To Many’s widespread owners, an 800-strong group put together by leading Melbourne syndicatpor Shelley Hancox.

The syndicate members paid just $880 each to join the Hancox Racing No 1 Syndicate, giving them shares in a package of five horses including Belong To Many.

They are now a long way in front on their investment as Belong To Many has now won five of her 18 starts with today’s Group 2 win doubling her prizemoney to almost $210,000.

Her win continued a successful Randwick carnival for Melbourne jockey James Winks, adding to his win in the G2 Tulloch Stakes at Rosehill on Golden Slipper day on the Bart Cummings-trained Book Of Kells.

WInks said the two wins were his first in Sydney since he was an apprentice.

“It’s been a great carnival for me winning two Group 2 races,” said Winks, who was lured to the carnival to ride for Cummings.

“Picking up the winning ride on Belong To Many has been a big bonus”

Belong To Many was able to cross to the lead in the first 200m and from there Winks was able to give the mare an easy time in front when other riders elected to sit back in a slowly run race.

“She went to sleep in front and gave me a big kick,” Winks told a group of her ecstatic owners in the mounting yard.

Belong To Many safely held a determined challenge from the previously unbeaten filly Tenant’s Tiara, who was gallant running second in her first defeat in three starts and will now be spelled.

The favourite Fritz’s Princess was locked away in the second half of the big field and had to force her way clear at the 300m before charging to the line for third.
