Monkerhostin Wins Gold Cup Chase
Monkerhostin rolled back the years to land the bet365 Gold Cup Chase at odds of 25/1 under Richard Johnson.
The 11-year-old had looked to be on the downgrade in three runs this season but Johnson always appeared confident on the Philip Hobbs-trained gelding in a slowly run affair.
Without A Doubt and Royal Auclair were always up with the sedate early gallop and were still there jumping the second last as the eventual winner and Hoo La Baloo threw down challenges.
But it was Monkerhostin, who almost won the King George VI Chase here three years ago, who proved the strongest from the final fence to clinch an emotional win by two lengths from Royal Auclair (14/1).
In a race that didn’t favour the strong stayers, last week’s Scottish National winner Iris De Balme - sent off the 9/2 favourite to complete the double - came with a late rattle to grab third place from Hoo La Baloo (9/1).
