Oliver Eyes Another BMW, Slipper Double
Champion jockey Damien Oliver is giving himself a chance of repeating last year’s Group One double success in Saturday’s The BMW and Golden Slipper Stakes at Rosehill.
Oliver believes New Zealand mare Princess Coup can avenge her Ranvet Stakes second to Tuesday Joy in the The BMW (2400m) while he has been gifted an inside draw on Anatomica in the Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m).
Last year Oliver completed the big race double on Blutigeroo in The BMW and Forensics in the Golden Slipper.
Princess Coup was at $3.30 for The BMW with TAB Sportsbet while Anatomica was $13 for the Golden Slipper.
Oliver declared The BMW the ideal race for Princess Coup after her second to Sirmione in the Australian Cup (2000m) six weeks ago.
“I said to them (the connections) after the Australian Cup that The BMW was the race for her,” Oliver said.
“There are not many staying weight-for-age horses around in the autumn and you don’t have to take on internationals.
“It is a lot tougher in the spring than in the autumn in these races and Blutigeroo showed that last year.”
Princess Coup, who finished third in last year’s Caulfield Cup, is a natural backmarker and unleashed strong runs from the tail of the field in both the Australian Cup at Flemington and the Ranvet Stakes at Canterbury.
Oliver said Princess Coup’s ability to unwind barnstorming finishes was her biggest asset.
“She has got a good turn of foot and it is always a big plus in those sorts of races,” Oliver said.
Tuesday Joy ($2.60) and Sirmione ($4.40) again loom as the biggest threats to Princess Coup who Oliver expects will improve at Rosehill.
“It was a terrific run last start and I think she will be much better suited at Rosehill compared to Canterbury,” Oliver said.
“It is a much bigger track at Rosehill and the longer straight will definitely help her.”
Oliver said he was pleased to pick up the Golden Slipper ride on the Joseph Pride-trained two-year-old filly Anatomica.
“No doubt she is in with a chance,” Oliver said.
Anatomica is a daughter of Choisir and last start, ridden by Craig Newitt, was beaten in photo-finish by Hips Don’t Lie in the Group Two Reisling Stakes (1200m) at Canterbury on April 5.
At her only other start she beat Bulavka on the Kensington track at Randwick on February 21.
Anatomica will be Oliver’s 12th Golden Slipper ride and he said that she would get her chance from barrier three to give him his second win in Australia’s premier juvenile event.
“It is always a big bonus to draw well in a race like that,” Oliver said.
“She’s in form and it was a great run the other day.”
